Trust and Data

Last updated: October 10, 2026

Urban Atlas is a coordination tool for cities and utilities, not an AI provider. We don't build, train, or host our own AI models. The AI features in Urban Atlas use Google's Gemini models, run inside Google Cloud and covered by Google Cloud's enterprise data terms.

This page explains how AI is used on your data, where that data lives, and who can see it.

Is our data used to train AI models?

No. Urban Atlas does not train or fine-tune any model on customer data.

Gemini is called through Vertex AI in Urban Atlas's own Google Cloud project, not through a consumer chatbot. Google Cloud's terms do not allow Google to use that data to train or fine-tune its models without permission, and we have not given it.

Which AI models does Urban Atlas use?

Only Google's Gemini models on Vertex AI. Your data is not sent to any other AI provider.

AI drafts coordination room briefs, answers questions inside a coordination room, and checks projects against comprehensive plans and capital improvement programs. Its output is advisory: it summarizes and flags, and the people in a coordination room make the decisions.

Does Urban Atlas change our systems?

No. Urban Atlas has read-only access to your systems of record. Connections to ArcGIS and Accela only search and read records; Urban Atlas never edits, adds, or deletes anything in them.

Synced data is copied into Urban Atlas for coordination, and your GIS and permitting systems remain the source of truth.

Where is our data stored?

On Google Cloud in the United States. The application, its PostgreSQL database, and uploaded documents are hosted in the us-east4 region, and document search for AI features runs on Vertex AI in us-central1.

Data is encrypted in transit over TLS and encrypted at rest by Google Cloud. Uploaded documents are kept in private storage with public access blocked. The database has daily automated backups with point-in-time recovery.

Who owns the data?

You do. Data your organization adds to Urban Atlas is used to provide the service to you and is not sold or shared with other customers. If you want data exported or deleted, contact us and we will handle it.

Who can access it?

Users sign in through Google Cloud Identity Platform, and every API request is checked against the user's organization and role. Roles are admin, contributor, and observer; observers have read-only access.

A coordination room is visible only to its participants and your organization's admins. Organization changes are written to an audit log that records who made each change and what changed.

Are you SOC 2 compliant?

Urban Atlas does not have a SOC 2 report yet. Our infrastructure runs on Google Cloud, which maintains its own SOC 2 and other compliance reports. We're happy to complete your security questionnaire or walk your IT team through our setup.
